Periodontal Treatment Post Operative Instructions

After your periodontal surgery, your lips, cheeks, teeth and tongue may be numb for several hours.  It is normal to experience some discomfort for several days after a surgery.
In order for the best possible results to be achieved, we ask that you follow these instructions:

  1. Avoid any chewing until the numbness has completely worn off.  Don't eat or drink anything hot for two hours following surgery.  A softer than usual diet is advised for the first week and it is best to favor chewing on areas which were not treated.

  2. Avoid brushing or flossing your teeth in the surgical areas until you see the periodontist for the follow-up check.  All other areas of the mouth may be cleaned in the usual manner.  You may use mouthwash to freshen your breath.  Peridex (prescription mouthwash) is recommended.

  3. Mild discomfort can sometimes be expected.  If necessary this can be controlled by taking the medication prescribed.  Avoid aspirin or products containing aspirin.  You may take a non-aspirin containing medication such as Ibuprofen, Tylenol, or Aleve.  If an antibiotic is prescribed, take the entire allotment as directed until completed whether or not you are in discomfort.

  4. If you notice any swelling, apply an ice pack to the face for 15 minutes on followed by 15 minutes off for the first day.  Continued ice is recommended for the next day if swelling persists.  It is not uncommon for swelling to show up on the second day post-surgery or for the swelling to increase on the second day as this is an average time for the body to respond to the surgery.

  5. If a surgical dressing has been applied, parts or all of the dressing may fall off within the week.  As long as you are comfortable, this is of no concern.

  6. Occasionally, bloodstains in the saliva will appear for the first 24 hours.  Should prolonged bleeding develop take gauze moistened with water and apply pressure to the site for 20 minutes.  It is a good idea to lie down with your head elevated if there is bleeding. If bleeding still continues, call the periodontist immediately.
  7. An appointment will be made for you in approximately 7-14 days for a follow up visit.

  8. If any problems or questions arise, please contact the specialist.

If any problems or questions arise, please contact the specialist.  Your cooperation is important in obtaining the best possible result.  Should you have any questions, please call the doctor at the regular office number 508-424-2525.
