Post Visit Instructions for Scaling and Root Planing

You have just undergone scaling and root planing which involves the use of local anesthesia.  Please follow these instructions for care of your mouth.

  1. Please do not eat or have any hot beverages or soup until anesthesia has worn off.  Because your mouth is numb there is a risk that you may bite numb areas such as the tongue, lip, or cheek.  Once feeling has returned you may eat on the areas treated today.

  2. It is normal for the areas to ooze (blood may be seen in the saliva) slightly after a scaling and root planing.  If the areas begin to bleed excessively, apply firm pressure to the area with wet gauze or a tea bag for 20 minutes. If the bleeding has not reduced please contact the periodontist immediately.

  3. It is normal to be slightly uncomfortable or sensitive for approximately 1-2 days following the scaling and root planning procedure.  You may take over the counter anti-inflammatories such as Advil (Ibuprofen), Tylenol or Aleve until the discomfort subsides.  Do not take aspirin for discomfort as this may increase oozing or bleeding.  If you continue to be sore longer than 2 days please contact the office.

  4. The goal of this treatment is to reduce the amount of bacteria above and under your gum line.  It is important to keep these areas as clean as possible with your home care.  Brushing and flossing twice a day is very important after this procedure.

  5. It is extremely important that you return for the re-evaluation visit which was made 4-6 weeks following the scaling and root planing appointments. This allows the Periodontist to reassess your periodontal condition and discuss further treatment goals.

If any problems or questions arise, please contact the specialist.  Your cooperation is important in obtaining the best possible result.  Should you have any questions, please call the doctor at the regular office number 508-424-2525
