Osseointegrated Titanium Implants Post Surgical Instructions
It is essential for the early healing process that the following directions are observed during the first 2 weeks after the operation:
- Only clear liquids should be taken during the first day to avoid inadvertent contamination of the wound. Semi-liquid (blended or mashed) food may be added to the diet on the second day. At 5 days post-surgery, resume your regular diet.
- Smoking and consumption of alcoholic beverages should be avoided during the time period.
- An extra pillow should be used the first 2 nights after the operation to elevate the head slightly. This will help to reduce swelling in the operated areas.
- Should any bleeding occur in the region of surgery, it may usually be stopped by softly biting for 15 minutes on a roll of gauze dressing, soaked in saline. If this does not control the bleeding, your oral surgeon should be contacted.
- After each meal, the mouth should be thoroughly rinsed with saline solution. (For the first week, please use sterile saline obtainable at most pharmacies). The second week and thereafter, you may make your own by boiling a quart of water and then adding 1 teaspoon salt (let cool). Please make a fresh batch daily.
- Commercial mouth rinses or other disinfections should NOT be used.
- Old dentures may not be worn until relining adjustments have been made insertion of dentures too early may jeopardize a successful healing process.
- If you are in doubt or there is any sign whatsoever of a disorder related to the healing of the implant areas, you are kindly requested to contact your specialist.
If any problems or questions arise, please contact the specialist. Your cooperation is important in obtaining the best possible result. Should you have any questions, please call the doctor at the regular office number 508-424-2525.
