Tooth Extraction (Simple) Post-Op Instructions

By following these instructions you will assist the area in its recovery
and prevent complications.

  1. Bite on gauze for at least one-half (1/2) hour.  Then throw it away.

  2. To help control post operative swelling, put an ice bag (wrapped in a small towel) against the side of the face 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off for the rest of the day.  No need to wake from sleeping to do this.

  3. For control of discomfort, take two (2) Tylenol tablets as soon as possible, then 2 tablets every four (4) hours as needed.  DO NOT take aspirin or Advil, which may potentiate bleeding.

  4. You may be provided with a prescription for medication to help with any discomfort.  We suggest that you fill the prescription and begin taking it immediately.  The following day, you should expect to have swelling and some minimal discomfort.

  5. Although some oozing of blood is to be expected, if some definite bleeding occurs, take a clean piece of 2x2 gauze, fold it, place it against the bleeding socket, and bite firmly for one-half (1/2) hour.  Under the surgical area, clots are now forming. These are important for proper healing.

  6. If bleeding continues after following the above, wet an ordinary tea bag with warm water, place it against the bleeding socket, and bite for one-half (1/2) hour.

  7. If bleeding still continues, call the doctor at the number given to you at the time of surgery.  If you are unable to reach the specialist, go to your local hospital emergency room.

  8. The day after surgery, if bleeding has stopped, rinse your mouth with warm salt water (use ½ teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water).  Do this every 2-3 hours, especially after each meal, for the next 7 days.

  9. Elevate the head for the first 24 hrs. When sleeping, use an extra pillow. Try not to bend over as this increases blood pressure in the head and can cause bleeding. Limit physical activity that day.

  10. There may be some bruising and discoloration in the surgical area. This is not of concern and will fade.

  11. No chewing until the local anesthesia has completely worn off.  No hot foods or hot beverages until local anesthesia have worn off.  You may immediately take any prescribed medication with water.  You may drink cool liquids or eat foods that do NOT require chewing (yogurt, applesauce, etc.) one hour after surgery.
  12. No spitting, rinsing, sucking or drinking through a straw today and NO SMOKING for 24 hours.  There may be a delay in the healing process if this step is neglected.

Your cooperation is important in obtaining the best possible result.  Should you have any questions, please call the doctor at the regular office number 508-424-2525.
